For my Dad

Whats up guys and gals, its been a super long time since I've been on here (actually been on and participated) and I have been out of the game for quite a long time.

My dad is in need of a new tower and wants to spend no more than $400 usd. He doesn't do much on the computer apart from youtube, vietnamese websites, ebay, craigslist, google, email, and word documents. I have an operating system on hand and will not salvage anything from the old computer. I want to build him something that will last him a very long time and be quiet. I have put together a list and I would love to hear what you guys and gals think.

Case
Cpu
Mobo
Psu
Ram
Hdd
Cd/Dvd

I would downgrade the HDD for a smaller one. You never said anything about keep large files on the computer, so a 500GB or even a 320GB would be enough. I would take that extra money and go for 4GB of RAM. Unless the OS is 32-bit, then I'd go for 2GB of 1333 RAM.

Since he doesn't do anything demanding then get the X2 260 cpu and save $35 and put it toward a better motherboard, plus save another $20 on a different hard drive since you don't need a lot of storage space.

What operating system will you be putting on this? If XP then 2gb will be plenty if vista or 7 then get 4gb of memory.

Thanks for the speedy input everyone.
I'm not really sure what beats what and what is the best bang for the buck now a days, could you guys fill me in?
I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that I will be running windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I do have a 64bit version as well, if that adds any thing to the system?

The reason why I chose the large hard drive was because its a 64mb cache, which means it would be faster than the rest, no?

I'll switch the ram to what Jonny suggested.

Is there a huge difference in performance between the cpu I chose and the AMD Phenom II X4 955?

For what your dad doing, he may not feel the difference between 955 or 640. But looking at the price, $105 vs $100. It worth going for 955

Mobo - it has to be AM3+, and with onboard vga

Use 64 bit computing. The cashe on the hdd won't really make a diff. For the use, no - the cpu won't make a difference and neither will this supermultitasker that will keep him as busy as he wants.

^ If they are still out when you see this, they won't be for long.

$280 if you count the deals, + ship and a case.
