For some reason if I use my laptop when burning a disc it screws it up now!

Until recently I was able to use my laptop while burning CDR's from downloads on my laptop without any problems but in the last 2 weeks or so if I use the laptop while burning it causes skips on the CD. If I burn without doing anything on the laptop the recording is perfect. Any idea what is causing this and what I can do?

Its not a memory problem as I have 8 GBs Ram and plenty of space. Any advice appreciated to fix this problem so I can multitask while burning. Thanks

You never should be doing anything extra when burning cd/dvd's. It's always been like that.

Early optical drives were very touchy to get a good burn but ever since optical drives implemented larger buffers to avoid buffer underrun I haven't had issues and can do other things on the computer while burning a disk.

Have you tried reducing the write speed? Instead of setting the write speed to max, set it to a fixed rate less than the max write speed of the drive. You may have to experiment a little to find a good burn speed. It may take longer to burn the disk but if it makes the difference between a usable or non-usable disk it's worth it IMO.

The writing speed is only 24X

Its really no problem to do nothing else on the computer when burning a CDR or even a DVD, I'm just curious why this started happening after a year.

I would set it lower just to be safe. I always go as low as possible, which I think is around 4x on mine. The theory I've heard is that it burns "deeper" on slow settings, if that's possible; I have no way of knowing if that's just a myth or not. What I do know is that doing it that way, I haven't had any problems.

I totally agree with this.

Additionally, I have never had issues doing other things on my machine while a disc is burning. Particularly on a reasonably powerful machine (which I assume yours would be, having 8 Gb of RAM), I can't possibly see why doing something else at the same time would cause errors; computers these days are designed to multitask.

Anyway, best wishes.
