Foreign purchases to be used in Canada?

Hi All,
I'll be travelling abroad to China in the near future. Currently I live in Canada and would like to bring back some computer parts Eg. Video cards, processors and RAM. to be used in my desktop.

If I were to pursue these purchases, would there be any compatibility issues in plugging a video card I purchased from China into a mother board that was purchased here in Canada?

Is there a concern revolving any wattage differences or any compability issuess? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

String.

Technically, you should not have a problem with wattage issues because video cards usually have a standard wattage for that model. But then again I am not sure what they have come up with (I mean the vendor in China).

One problem that you will definitely see is when you need to return the goods you bought either because it is broken or just not compatible. Personally, I would not go the way you are planning mainly because of the problem that I have just mentioned to you.

But if you insist on buying there and bringing it back. I guess I don't have much to say other than make sure that the goods you are buying is original and have proper documentation.

Also I have read some where sometimes ago about the good that you are buy is different than the one you intended to buy (in other words, they switch out the merchandise). I think the scenario goes something like this:
"A buyer pick out an item and you ask the vendor the price and blah blah blah... After much bargaining both of them agreed on a price. Then the vendor said something about getting the buyer a new one from the storage somewhere (not in the same shop). When he came back the buyer's item is already wrapped up and ready to go. However, when the buyer got home and open the wrap, he found out that the item was not what he wanted to buy. So the buyer go back to the vendor saying that the item was wrong. The vendor would not admit it and insist that the buyer had switch out the item to trick or something like that."

So... yeah, just be careful. I am not sure whether that story is true or not but someone apparently had that experience and wrote to a magazine that my mom was reading some time ago.

Sorry for the long post. :D :D

EDIT: Just realize that you are new. So Welcome to Computer Forum!!!

Hey Thanks for the reply.

I agree that the issue of returning an item is going to be near impossible if purchased abroad. When assessed risk vs reward, the yen is lower than Canadian dollars, the overall price of the items are cheaper so in total, I would be saving close to 200+ CDN per item.

BTW, the items that are being sought after are a 8800 GTX, Quad Core Intel processor, and an OCZ ram kit. Not bleeding edge, but close.

I'm hoping to get some more opinions from here; I will make a more concrete decision once I'm there.

Thanks again all!

I believe China's currency is not yen. It's Yuan or RMB.

Hope you got what you are looking for there without being scammed and without any problem.
Good Luck. :)

I wouldn't buy anything from China. I'm not trying to sound pessimistic, but a lot of fraud occurs in China. A member of this forum recently got screwed on a USB Drive purchaed in that country (Click Here). Try to find a very reputable reseller.
