my friend forgot his windows password (for windows XP). He cant

login anymore. He is the only user in that computer. no other

accounts have been made. Will he install a fresh copy of

windows? or is there any other way so that he could retrieve

the password or log-in in windows?

Booting up in safe mode wont do anything hence there is only one account.

When you boot into safe mode, the Administrator account becomes visible. You then go into that account, user accounts, and delete the password from the original user. This post from you shows you still know nothing and just like to post.

And I thought I said I wouldn't tell him.

Its kinda hard to do that when he only has one account, isnt it?
No... unless he uses his administrator account regularily, then he should be able to access the administrator user on the log on screen by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del twice (when the easy logon screen appears). Then there would be an advance log on screen. Under the username section, type in administrator. He should be able to log in and then change/delete the user he uses.

I hate the gray area these kind of Posts encompass. Not to mention we see about one per day, everyone following the same format: "my umm...friend...locked himself out of his system and doesn't remember the password. Can u hlp??????" READ: I want to hack a system, but I'm a wannabe with no madskillzyo and need you to hold my hand so I can feel big" or "my parents took away my computer privileges but I want them to think they can't lock me out and I pwn tehir system". I'm sure there ARE exceptions where someone is legit and really needs help (maybe once every 3-4 months) but it just gets old really quick...

Can a Mod step in and give a definitive 'yes' or 'no' regarding whether or not we're allowed to respond to password Q's? And if the answer is 'no, don't respond' can it be added to the Forum Rules? Rules 1 + 2 skirt around the edges, but aren't very clear at all.

They are clear enough for me and thats a No.

Point in case. Clear enough for you. Clear enough for myself and voyager, too apparently. Half the Forum says 'yeah, it's ok to post since the rules don't mention we can't' and the other half says 'no, it can be used for malicious purposes so we won't tell you'.

Clearly-defined black and white is nice. Super-nice even:) Grey sucks.

 I think you mistook the meaning of my last post...

You and I are on the 'no, don't tell them how' side of the line. Others are on the 'yes, tell them, it's ok' side. Hence, the source of all the confusion regarding Threads like this.

That was the only meaning the Post was meant to serve. There was nothing deeper to read into.

I'm not sure what's worse.. The idiot trying to take us as idiots...or the idiotic logic of some idiot trying to make us believe that a guy that uses his computer all the time SUDDENLY forgot his password.

Some people are so damn stupid. They need to find a new hobby. Like. Now.
