format harddrive

hi all......new to forum and not to clever with solving hard ware probs but got a problem....

just added another hard drive in my tower as a slave,ive gone to format it and get message saying windows cannot complete the format.....
the only thing i might av done wrong is,,choosing the wrong setting for slave on the back of hard drive as it doesnt say what is slave or master,,does anybody av any ideas,,,,,,cheers

oh,,if poss could you keep it very very simple thx.......
 
sata doesnt need jumpers. depends on the brand. maxtor i remember the first row is master and 2nd row is cable select. use the second row if you are using it as a slave. it should say on the label of the hardrive or hitachi at least above where you set the jumper there should be a sticker

yeah, i know. but it does have jumpers and they are needed, just for something other than the subject of this post. damn, i brought nothing to this one, lol.
