hi i've got a old dell...back form about 1996.. computers a piece i want to reformat the hard drive...its windows 98 and i have the disc's...i was just wondering if someone could help me out with the dos code/commands or what to do to get the process done. i searched for a write up but came up with nothing, anyone got anything or could anyone help, thanks!

Simple: format C:

I assume your getting a new PC?

i know to format "c" but how do i actually go about doing it so i can reinstall windows???

i have a nice built pc the old one i just want to get running for sh!ts and giggles and for the old games i used to love back in the day that wont run on xp...remember when games only ran on 98....i know long time ago...thought it'd be cool to get it fixed and see if i can get it to work...if not i guess it'll look nice in the dump.

the start up diskette you got with the Win 98 CD should offer a tools menu. That or the emergency startup diskette will have a reformat feature. If your win 98 CD was an upgrade you will need to prove you were qualified. This could mean going back to win 3.1 or win 95 diskettes. usually hard drives come with an installation program that would also have a reformat feature. Maxtor (now seagate) offers max blast which features low level formatting and particianing.

ran "fdisk" deleted the "1 dos partition"
created new partition..it said restart so i restarted it, i'm not getting A:\ anymore and therefore cant type in the comand to get it to boot the cd...help please!!!!

once its booting back up it just sits there with a blank screen...if i push a button it just makes some noises and doesnt do anything

You have to boot to the floppy again and then switch to the D:\ drive.

After the floppy boots, select "Boot with CD-ROM Support" and then when it hits A:\, type D:\ <enter> then install.

Just insert the Windows 98 startup Disk into the floppy drive when the computer is first turned on. It should automatically boot to the floppy.

1. Enter BIOS, select primary boot device floppy disk, and secondary hdd
2. Insert your MS-Dos startup disk diskette into your floppy.
3.Boot your computer up.
4.After the computer boots from your diskette enter FDISK(type fdisk and press enter)
5.From fdisk remove your partition and create another
6.Exit Fdisk and type format c: and press enter
7. After format is complete acces your cd drive letter and enter setup.
8.DONE

FDisk can only partition 7-8GB only though.

Depends on how old of a verision you use, I just did a 40gbs. The most recent boot disk from microsoft only lets you do up to 137gbs. I think even the built in FDISK on ME cds will partition one up to 512gbs. Microsoft only limits it because they want you to use NTSF for anything above. But they make 3 party boot disk that will let you partition a FAT 32 in about any drive size

i dont know what i did but i just kept turning it off and on trying different boot disk's and it eventually went...who knows...anyways, got it working, thanks for the help!
