Formatting HD on xp for backing up 98se files

i have a ton of files on my old 98se computer for a lettering program that i have. i need to upgrade the lettering program and need to go to xp. can i formatt a 80 gig HD with the ntfs file structure and plug it into my 98se computer and backup all these files onto it? i can't get a usb port to work with any of my usb drives no matter what i do and am looking for a work around to solve this problem.

Pull the drive out and connect it to the other computer with this cable. It's much easier.
