Formatting issue

I had an old drive laying around that I cleared off and formatted NTFS from FAT32. I have been using it for video storage only. Today I removed everything except it wont delete "recycler" and "$AVG" also trying to reformat back to FAT32 doesnt work either. XP says to turn off disk utilities and make sure no windows are open displaying the contents of the drive. Any help would be great.

This all started because I want to put the drive in a new build with Ubuntu but the bios said no drive detected.

what kind of set up are you trying to do with this drive, are you trying to install it as a secondary slave drive, if its ide you will have to set the jumpers to suit, try formatting with a 3rd party boot disc like parted magic.

Shortly after I posted this I managed to get the drive recognized. However that still does not help with the formatting issue. I have it in my HTPC at the moment trying to install ubuntu but it wont take it. I was able to install on my external 500gb though. Now I am going to try to boot from the external and install ubuntu on the internal hd in the new rig.

(to answer your question I am trying to use this as a primary drive. The jumper is fine.)

Also I will try the parted magic. I dont know what that is but I am going to search for it now.
