Formatting of Hard Disk

HI, I am using windows operating system and would like to format my hard disk and reinstall windows. May I know the steps, please.

1. Back up all of your data
2. Put the xp disc in the tray (or what ever os you have)
3. Shut down the pc
4. Turn it back on
5. Go into BIOS and change the boot order to the cd/dvd drive being first
6. restart the pc
7. press a key, when it says boot from cd rom
8. follow the on screen steps from there
9. success

You have the install cd right?

If this is a laptop, most likely you will have a recovery partition... You can just do everything like a CD, just without the CD, booting, and CMOS part...
