FPS counters?

Can anyone give me a good program that tells me what kind of frame(rate)s I'm getting? I tried googling for some, but didn't come up with anything, so... anyone?

The most commonly seen program used to see frame rates displayed onscreen while gaming is FRAPS. That can also record small clips from a game while being played. The annoyance of course is the need for the full version for sound and no way to hide the counter while recording cluips or capturing screenshots.

Cam Studio is another recorder but may not have a counter. D3DGear 3.15 is one to look over being a Windows game frame rate counter tool seen at http://games.softpedia.com/get/Tools/D3DGeaR.shtml
 
The main problem with the free version remains as far as recording sound plus not being able to record without the frame counter seen for taking screenshots when used. Other then that it works well for the frame counter seen there.

The D3DGear tool looked interesting where some feedback on that one would be good one way of the other if you decide to give that one a try.
 
yeah FRAPS free version sucks. but the OP was just asking for a program that'll show his FPS in game. he didn't state that he needed a software to record videos from his games. so, the free version of FRAPS will do you good. ;)
 
Why do you think I mentioned FRAPS to start with since that what it does the best. On the other hand I still haven't found one that will record both video and sound while in a game without seeing a counter displayed. And that's after looking over several.

A lot of games with have a console mode, which is an in game command line interface and from there you can enable FPS graphs and a lot of time third party is not needed. I haven't really used FRAPs but I hear it does give your game overhead when running it so you may expect a bit of performance decrease. I don't know of any software based alternatives though besides capturing it from video out on your video card.
 
Cam Studio is another program supposedly good for recording. But that simply wouldn't even start up once a game here was started depending as well as on which one was running. What was looked for here was capturing avi or mpeg IIs and saved right on the drive not trying an external recording device off of the card.

FRAPS itself isn't as bad as others for seeing a drag when displaying the counter only. It's when you are trying to record clips you then see game lags since a second app is running simultaneously along with the game itself also seeing a request on video signal. Even when pressing an assigned key for screen shots in different games you can see a slight drag for a split second while that saves an image file.

You have to take that into account as a separate item from any counter running by itself. Meanwhile the D3DGear 3.15 is a totally recent as January bench marking tool that can record as well as benchmark the frame rates according to the little info seen on the download page there.

It might even display the counter with less intrusion on the game itself being a more updated for newer games type of tool. Only giving each a try and comparing results will show which is actuallly better.
 
I use the console command in the games i play to show fps (but also, atm, I play mostly source games). But i think most games allow you to display fps through console.

I have used FRAPS in the past to monitor fps. Works fine and easy.
 
I tried it on Half Life 2, Prey, FEAR, Soldier of Forune II to see it run on not all like SOF II there. I used it on FEAR mainly since no attempt made could see screen captures while FRAPS left the counter being displayed being the annoyance here. None of the games here see a frame counter of their own including Crysis while all still see a dropdown console for developer codes.
