FPS Lag issues - I think

Hello,

Just wondering if I could gain some knowledge from people out there of a certain issue I have.

Firstly I will list my spec as it might make things easier:

OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
RAM: 2048MB
GPU: GeForce 9600GT - 512MB
2 Monitors - 1. Samsung 226BW (1680x1050) 2. Acer AL2017 (1400x1050)
DirectX version 9.0c

Ok, that should be enough information, but if not just ask.

Now for my problem. When playing games (WoW, Simcity 4, GTA, Far Cry) I am get 'random' what I believe to be FPS lag. The screen will jutter (Mouse doesn't) and then after 30 secs it has gone. I can be doing nothing and looking at the floor etc and it will still happen. I have lowered all the graphic effects in these games to zero! and still I get the issue.

I have had Task Manager up while this happens at it shows I am using about 65% of CPU (when playing the game), but the only process that is "sucking" power is the game in question. I have killed all running programs and disconnected myself from the internet and played the games that don't require internet access and still I get the issue.

I have also checked my temps:

CPU1: 52C
CPU2: 53C
GPU: 50C
HDD1: 25C
HDD2: 33C

I don't see anything 'alarming' in those temperatures which could pose an issue.

Can someone please let me know what they think?

EDIT: Forgot to add, I have checked for spyware and viruses also. :)

Have you tried updating your video drivers? Also, what kinda temps do you get under the load of a game?

Yep updated the video drivers as well.

Playing WoW and having my character sat in Stormwind (For those who don't play WoW, it can be quite a FPS intensive place. I will have a FPS of about 50-60, which will then drop down to 10 then back up to 60.

My temps at this point in time are:

CPU1: 53C
CPU2: 50C
GPU : 49C
HDD1: 26C
HDD2: 33C

well, try turning down the settings. if the lag does go away, its probably your hardware to blame.

also, when this lag hits, try checking task manager (switch real fast when the lag hits) and see what your ram is running at. 2gb might be too little.

my best bet, is that your video card is straining a bit to work both monitors and (probably) multitask too.

i thought that too, but without any blue screens or artifacts, idk.

When i was working on overclocking my 9800gtx i would get random lag and whatnot, but i didnt get things such as bsod's. To be honest i only have had 2 bsod's on my current rig and both were because of messing with .bat scripts(like the kind where it conitnually opens cmd windows until your comp runs outta memory and slows to a crawl...>_>)

I have now reformatted my PC and reinstalled World of Warcraft, which was one of the games having the lag issue and I still have the same problem.

E.g: my FPS can be hovering around the 50-55 mark. Then all of a sudden drop to 10 fps. If I alt tab to Task manager it doesnt show the WoW.exe using any more processing power. I still use about 62% cpu usage (Same kinda number - regardless of lag)

So, I can only guess that I have some hardware issue somewhere, if after reformatting I stil lhave the issue.

Do you guys agree?

Gta and Far cry are quite demanding,I wouldnt be suprised if your cpu is causing the bottleneck.

But yeah try lowering the settings.

But what would cause this to change all of a sudden? When I was able to play the games quite happily - it struggles on something like Trackmania now, which it never did before!

Maybe you should update all the drivers? And you should get a 600/700 watt PSU anyway, just to be safe. And it sounds stupid, but I've known several people who had a problem with there computer, and they took apart the computer and put it back together and it worked again :]
Anyways don't trust me, idk why you got lag :(
