Frame Rates....Blah Blah Blah

I am in the process of researching for a my first build coming from a mac owner (I also played games primarily on xbox) and I dont quite understand the whole frame rate craze. I understand that you want to be able to run games with all the features enabled, but as long as the FR is just above 30fps you cant tell the difference correct? Or is that what your aiming for but the gpu just happens to run one game at 90fps and another at 29?

People always seem to go for ultra high FPS, I am quite happy at 35fps on games, even 26fps at points on GTA does not bug me at all.

the difference between 30 and 60 is definately noticable tough. (at 60 it appearst to be perfectly smooth, at 30 it doesnt. )

60 frames is the threshold for FPS games

After that you see no difference

I used to play at 30 - 40 frames, with not all the settings turned up, and now with my GTX295, i play everything on max, but the best thing for me is not the picture quality, but rather how much smoother it all is.

I actually started to benefit from my laser mouse now... whereas before, it didnt help as much

Yeah i noticed just today when i was playing GRID that most of the time my fps were about 50, but then i started recording a video with Fraps, which causes my frame rates to drop to about 30, there was a noticeable difference in how smooth it ran, it was playable but not nearly as good.

i think it also depends if you're playing on lcd or crt.
i have a crt and anything below 60fps will give me a headache after about 30min of playing.
the game frontlines fuel of war is capped at 60fps and i can't really get into it because of this.
also, after long days of working on the computer, i start seen scan lines on the walls :(
but i think it's because the crt is pretty old.

I used to play halo on my pc at 85 fps with an 85 hz refresh rate, so I was able to get the full 85 fps. One day, I had underclocked back to normal specs and the frame rate dropped to 55 fps and I noticed a huge difference.

For racing games, I'm less picky and I find 30-40 to be satisfactory

In WoW you can't tell the different between 55-60. But anything below 55 is totally noticable.

That's why i'm getting snippy about my FPS. I need my games super smooth!

you can turn down the video options to get higher fps(frame per second),and there are some options you should think firstly when you really need to turn the options down.
such as antialiasing,VSYNC,reflect,etc.
