Free anti-spyware and such?

OK, since I keep my computer so locked down I'm usually not too concerned with anti-spyware (or usualy even anti-virus :o ) but I was given this old computer that "was virus infested" and asked to clean it off. It's now sitting infront of me with a fresh copy of XP installed, but I'm wondering what to do now. It's only a PIII 1GHz so I don't want anything too crazy on it.

I'm thinking of using AVG on it, unless there's a better free program (mostly thinking low resource than anything  ) I know of some programs such as Adaware and Spybot, but I'm curious what the best real-time spyware catching software is... Any suggestions?

Bit Defender perhaps... Norton = No Go :P Key word is FREE. Plus I'm quite anti-Norton after I've seen what a resource hog most of their software is.

AVG,AVAST, are your top choices for free. I have a old computer i rebuild thats 800Mhz celeron and its run avg no problem

Yeah I'd say Avast Free. I put it on a slow laptop and I couldn't tell when it was updating or not...Which is pretty good considering updates take up a bit of cpu usage :P

Norton Internet Security, Bit Defender ~

Norton? Seriously?

Also Bit Defender isn't a real-time AV program.

Good choice, personally i like Avira for AV a little heavier but very good detection rates. Comodo is a good FW, Malwarebytes' for Malware/Spyware/All that jazz. Also some security add-ons for FF would be good.

I currently have AVG and Spybot/TeaTimer which seems to work pretty well. I might check into these others in a bit though. I'll have the old PC around until Monday.

BTW, specs if anyone's curious. It's quite a beast...

PIII 1.0GHz
384MB RAM (I added 128MB)
20GB HD
Matrox dual-head GPU (high-end stuff for the time :P)
CD-ROM

Damn that get crysis running! :P

Microsoft Security Essentials i linked too doesnt use much memory,However what os is that beast running? Might not work right on anything under Xp.

Definatly worth a try though....i thought it would be a bit meh,But i like it.

Im waiting for it to become more mature, and see those comparison results against AVG,Avast etc.
