Free photo editor

Does anyone make a good photo editor recommendation. I currently have GIMP, but it has a pretty dificult interface, its kind hard to use and figure out. I mostly just want to sharpen photos from a cell phone and make them look better and add simple effects (such as b&w) and minor touch up. Im sure GIMP is well capable of doing this, im just having troulble figuring out how.

A recommendation of a easier program or some help with GIMP would be appreciated.
