Ok, I would like to start transfering my old tapes/LP to MP3/Cds. I have no money to buy a new computer or any hardware/software. Would like to use my existing computer which runs on a pentium4 with mic input in the soundcard. Are there any freewares i can find online to do this?

I would like to transfer the stuff directly to MP3 as i have little space on my hardrive for wav format.

i have a second option which is using my wifes old apple which runs on OS x 10 (much faster and better than my PC). But I don;t see a mic or sound inout on the back!!!! Are there any cheap USB input device with software i can buy?

Thanks

First you would need something to play the music that also has an OUTPUT port, which can then be plugged into the input of the computer. Do you?

yes, yes of course .. i have my tape player and record player .. i have already plugged them into my mic input of PC and the sounds comes out witha good enough quality for me .. i just need a software to capture it, in MP3 since i have no hard drive space for all my records and tapes.

I think audacity, which is free, will work.....someone correct me if i am wrong. i'm at work and not at my computer.

yes, i have XP.

I will chck audacity! I did a lot of looking around on the net, but couldn't find anything for free . . ..

i just loaded audocity and it seems to be a very nice tool! just did a quick test and it is working .. just a problem i ran into! it seems that the mic input on my soundcard is mono and not stereo .. is that possible? i thought the input on all sounds card are in stereo?!!!

You plugging your turntable directly into your pc? With no phono amp in between?

You will not get any really decent sound doing that. You need either a receiver with a phono amp built in, and then using the aux connection directing it to your pc in jack.

Or you can buy a cheap phono amp adapter and use it that way. With out using one, your sound would really suck!

One like this would be ok.

Pyle PP-999 Phono Turntable Pre-Amp

No, to start with, i used my portable cd player to run some tests .. i noticed that the input level meter was moving the same on both right and left side on some songs that i know it only comes out the right channel .. than i pulled out the left channel cable from the back of the cd player and i still having sound coming from both of my computer speaker .. i am just trying to find out if the mic inputs on sound cards are mono or stereo ?

The input of the .mp3 format is based on the settings u make. Mono or Stereo you can choose i the setting before recording.
Juven.
