Free songs? How is it illegal anymore?

OK, so as with my recent post, I'm getting on myspace. So, here's a new question for you guys. We all know about the crap Napster got and similar P2P programs because of music transfers...

OK, well first off, what about online radios? Or standard FM radio? Is that illegal to record and possible transfer? I mean it's totally free!

BUT, here's what really gets me. Have you guys played around with the music on Myspace? They have some REALLY high quality streaming stuff there, and it's totally free(and legal, I assume :rolleyes: ) I just got done recording it, so now is that illegal? Is it illegal that I shared it with someone because myspace was being a pain and not loading? :rolleyes:

I'm just curious, and ranting a bit. I mean after all this crap and here you can get some of the latest songs for free. Hmm... I wonder if Metalica is on there...

Yes i have noticed this too. And the same thing about TV. Record music videos with Tivo, plug the hdd into your comp and bam you have free music videos in awesome quality.
 
From what i know... "stream ripping" is illegal... many are getting banned from shoutcast because of it. All depends what country you are in I think.

Downloading music is still legal in Canada I believe...
 
Motoxrdude : There's an easier way :P It's called video capture cards, or DVD recorders

Altanore : Man how the hell could it be illegal to record what you hear? I'm not doubting you, though, how stupid some rules are... I mean, espcially with some of these things that you can even play over and over again! It's not like a radio station or a one time listen deal.
 
well basically olny sharing files is ilegal and i dont think you would be sharing it with any 1 unless u use napster, limewire, etc
 
Well I don't know... there are some really stupid laws yes, but stream ripping is pretty much like downloading music. You are just using a different method to do it... It is easy to record it undetected though.

I remember one station threatening to report people who were stream ripping and would bring them to court. I would post a link to there forum that had the post but the site is down now.
 
I posted this once before awhile back, but as far as recording stuff, I know a long long time ago when cassette recorders came out, there was a big issue over whether or not it was legal to record songs off the radio to cassette, and the final verdict was that it was legal (I'm sure with restrictions like you can't sell it or anything), dunno if that fits well into this situation or not, but thought I'd share

A comitee in france is deliberating and may declare downloading legal to a certain extent...Therefore probably giving ideas to the canton of geneva in switzerland. (Switzerland is divided into cantons...the equivalent to states or provinces...but swiss cantons are much more independant...therefore are able to make their own laws and programms)
 
Also, if anyone has tried AIM Triton, it includes free XM radio. Something that a load of people pay for. Lol!
 
My cousin used to work in the legal department of HBO, and he told me a while back that with TV, you are licensed to make 1 personal copy of a TV program, etc. If you share it or make more than 1 copy, it's illegal.
 
ok, i may be way off-base here, but from what i understand, it's illegal to upload music to another user, but not to download it. so, technically, when you download something off of a P2P network, you're not breaking the law, but you're causing someone else to. :D

so does that mean it is legal to download aa copy of a TV program, if you, say, forgot to record it, surely it is the same principle, wouldn't it then be the person distributing it who is on the wrong??
