Free Web Editors vs. Commercial Web Editors

Hi.

I'm about to design my website, but I don't yet have any web editing software. I'm wondering whether or not it's worth spending some money to have a quality commercial web editor like adobe dreamweaver. Or are free web editors just as good?

My site will be used primarily for showcasing my 2-d artwork, which will be arranged in thumbnails that can be enlarged. But I may also want to have a blog on there, or at least a section where I can post my own rants. I may also want to put my own home-made videos on there. But all of that can wait; for now I'm content just showcasing my 2-d art.

Thanks.

Hey mustardgas... That's a hell of a handle... :good:

Look into WordPress. Also, from my understanding, most people who design quality websites don't use programs like Dreamweaver, but tend to "hardcode" their sites using graphical text editors. I assume that you're a Windows user, so I'll recommend Textpad.

I don't know how dedicated you are to learning webdesign. It would be beneficial for you to do so - combined with Wordpress, you can make awesome sites like the ones showcased here and here.

But if you just want a quick fix to blog and display your artwork, you might have a look at this page which lists many websites where you can upload, sell and blog about your artwork: http://www.website-creations.org/our links.htm. I just glanced through a couple, but this one looked promising from the list: http://www.artbreak.com/

Hope that helps. :D

I already purchased a domain name and one month of web space. Also, I have no knowledge of coding, so I'd rather not go the graphical text editor route. I really just want to get my artwork up as quick as I can. I purchased web space because it makes me feel like I have my own unique territory that bares my name. I'm not so concerned about how flashy or original the design of the site itself. In fact, I want to keep it pretty simple (plain and monochromatic background, a category called traditional art and a category called digital art, then enlargeable thumbnails respective to both categories). Through this forum, I was offered a link to a really good website- www.thesitewizard.com- which has tutorials for the commercial web editor Dreamweaver, and the free web editor KompoZer. I don't like to dance back and forth between options for too long, so I'll probably either go with Dreamweaver or KompoZer, since thesitewizard has been so reliable and informative already. But I just want to be certain of the capability of some of the freeware that's out there.
