Freeware programs.

Most of the time freeware programmers simply want to give something to the community, in the same way that many people on this forum give their freetime helping others. Also, wouldn't it be good to be made famous for a freely available program that becomes used as widely as the likes of Winamp or some other massively popular freeware program? I guess some people enjoy trying to undermine the bigger companies with a similar free product to what they're offering. Several reasons.

For some it is a matter of philosophy. "Information wants to be free" Intellectual property, like software should be freely available. That is the reason for the free software movement.

Many software packages were created just for the fun of it, and they grew from there...like Linux.

Some programmers are just lazy:D easier to give software away "caveat emptor" than to support it like you would have to do for a commercial item.

a lot of freeware programs are based on the binaries of retail software :)

take divx for example, it's based in the windows media codecs, which is an improved mpeg4 revision 10 scheme

Also, sometimes the creators can make some money off of advertising. It's not the primary motive for creating freeware, of course, but it does help.

Also another reason is that they could just want to give you Viruses &/or Hack your computer  !
Or it could be that the freeware could be of lesser value than the buying one :( .
But, it could be what you guys said :) .
