Freeware Recommendation to download and convert video files

Hi,

I´m in a search for a freeware to download and convert some videos from discovery in order to put in a powerpoint. There are lots of tools but I am afraid of all these mini tools that can do anything, especially mess up a PC...any help is appreciated
 
I also recently came across this tool - Audials - and I find it really good. It´s a audio, video streaming tool and also a audio and video converter. You can download videos from discovery as well as from other streaming videos websites. However it is not free and the demo is limited. But I find that it is worth the money (personally).
