Freezing during Windows Install

I had built my dad a computer and recently I built myself a new one and he took my old one. So he wanted to give his old one to his sister, he had been having problems with it freezing on him so I thought I'd reformat and reinstall windows. The first time I reinstalled windows fine and it froze up and kept freezing every time I tried to install SP2. So I tried reformat again and reinstall and now it freezes everytime it is copying over system files. Different places every time, the furthest I've gotten was 93% yesterday. Also I took out the HD and threw it in my new computer and started installing Windows on it and it went through it fine so the HD seems to be good.

XP Install freezing

have you tried a new CD ROM drive or IDE cables to the drives? Have you run a test on the memory in the computer you built (IE Memtest86 or other)??

Often the cdrom drive may work perfectly when used under an already installed copy of windows, but the xp install process is very intensive on the drive itself and the memory. If either has any type of problem whatsoever, the behaviour you've described can occur. Try a new cd drive, or one from another computer just to get through the install at least. If that doesn't work run Memtest86 off a floppy or something to ensure the RAM is good.

Other than that there are other hardware faults that could cause it, mainly the motherboard, but give those things a shot first.
