Freezing problem with PCMCIA USB cardbus

As I have a lack of USB ports on my laptop, I installed a PCMCIA USB cardbus a couple of months ago. Ever since I installed the card, it has been giving me problems. The cardbus can recognise the device but everytime when I insert my USB device(particularly thumbdrives) into the cardbus, it would freeze my laptop for about 15 to 20 seconds and data transfer speed are extremely slow compared to the USB ports intergrated on the laptop itself. It would take about 2mins to transfer a 3MB music file using the cardbus compared to the intergrated USB ports which took only a mere second. Sometimes my USB drives would keep disconnecting and reconnecting itself. I have also checked with the device manager which stated that it was working properly.

Now can anyone tell me what to do? I only have two USB ports on my laptop and I can't afford to use any of them as one is for modem and the other a mouse. I have also used a USB hub before, which as well gives just about the same problem as the PCMCIA cardbus.

You should try uninstalling the USB cardbus device from device manager manually and reinstall the device again. Though I am not technically experienced with this field, I am sure there may be some form of conflicts with the cardbus trying to access onto your USB main hub. Also check that your hardware device is working properly.
 
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but the cardbus device still gave freezing issue. What else could be done?
 
what OS are you running? reason i ask is, i had trouble with my Cardbus slot when i was using linux...
 
I am using Windows XP Home SP2. The cardbus instrctions manual stated that there is easy configuration with Windows XP based OS. It also stated on the package that there it is a conflict-free hardware as it is plug and play. I wonder what other hardware is recommended for extra USB ports besides a USB hub or cardbus?
 
I understand that you have a lack of USB ports for your hardware devices as you are using a laptop. Why not try unplugging the USB mouse and let your thumdrive use your motherboard's USB port where you control the mouse movement by using the touchpad/pointing stick? As for the cardbus, maybe get a computer specialise to troubleshoot the hardware conflicts for you?
 
why not get a usb hub that plugs into on of the usb ports on your laptop? seems alot cheaper and alot easier to install and use.
