Freezing?

Has anyone had the same problem that I keep getting which is:
If I double click quickly on Documents, Pictures, Music, Video they load ok but freeze (most times) I get the magic green circle revolving and nothing happens if ‘when I get impatient’ I try clicking again the monitor goes into fade mode with the message such and such is not responding so I call up task manager and stop the program, now I am not sure whether the fault is:

a, with me for being too quick and impatient.

b, A problem with the computer Dell inspiron 530 it has 4GB ram and 500GB HD

c, With Vista home which has all the updates etc.

I have done Dell restore but this makes absolutely no difference
I have also run both check disc options but to no avail.
 
When you said you did the dell restore, does that mean you took it back to factory condition when you bought it? I would suspect maybe errors on the hard drive or a corrupt install. What brand of hard drive is it?
 
Thanks John, firstly I apologize for my late reply due to not getting notification of reply plus my www connection collapsed and was only just fixed. yes my restore was to factory conditions 3 times I tried, the only info that I see on the HD is "Hitachi HDP725050GLA360ATA device, after check disc it was ok for a couple of days only, the last time it made no difference
 
I had to get a friend to perform this operation as it was a bit too tech for me, I will see how it goes over the next few days
