French Supermarkets!

The title isn't the most obvious ever I know but anyway I've been in France for the last 2 weeks and I've been going to Leclerc and Auchan a fair bit for food, it's just so nice!

Both of these supermarkets sell components, in Leclerc I saw to name a few bits:
  • OEM Sempron 3000+
  • A few ASRock motherboards
  • Enermax PSU
  • Several graphics cards
And in Auchan I saw an Antec Earthwatts 500W and a TruePower Trio @ 550W. This means the selection of quality of some components beats the UK PC World by quite a bit! Although PC World now do Gigabyte motherboards. What do you lot think of this surprising and wholly bizarre idea?

Well it's not that new a thing here in the UK I don't believe. Aldi have been selling computer components for a while now. I think Tesco are even starting to dab in that market. Those guys are even selling their own software now too which I found quite funny. Tesco Anti-Virus, Teso Firewall. Wouldn't surprise me if they start bringing out Tesco Value motherboards etc soon. But from what I can remember I'm sure I've seen one or two components for sale in the large Tesco recently opened in my city.

I think it's cool that supermarkets are starting to spread away from selling just food and what not. But the markets they are trying to get into (the computer market for example), I believe most will only benefit from the lesser literate computer people rather than the advanced user. As for advanced computer individuals the online availability and efficiency will always dominate.

Rove.

UK PC World is nothing short of shocking, i quite honestly wouldnt touch them for anything bar the odd cable. They stock the most overpriced rubbish i have ever seen! Most towns/cities will have a smaller independant computer supplier that will stock a far better range and at better prices if you need something the same day

I agree, Jimmy and Silicon Boulevard in France is a fantastic chain with all manner of components. Congrats on the moderator status by the way.

ta :)

I rarely buy items from retail stores for my computer anymore, if i need to then it'll be from an independant store or Bowlers computer fair over in manchester

Auchan and Leclerq are more expansive, go to Fnac or other stores in France to buy your components :D

Aye the prices weren't the best but the nearest Fnac was in Avignon, about an hours drive from where I was staying. I do keep meaning to go to the one in the National Motorcycle Museum.

US PC shops are just as bad as UK by the sound of it... I've never seen anything remotely resembling a good deal, even at the smaller stores. I never buy anything not online unless it's a cable or a fan or something small.
