fried CPU or Motherboard?

Hello, I have a question hopefully someone knows about this.

I have this dead laptop which I am trying to get working
I completely disassemble it and left motherboard CPU and power supply.

If I press the switch all it does (same as it did when assembled) the power led blinks for about one second and then turns off. No fan activity or bios post.

If I remove the CPU and turn it on, led stays on but of course nothing else happens.

I tested the power supply with a voltmeter and it seems to be ok.

Last time it worked it would turn on sporadically and worked perfectly when it did turn on , same happened on battery or plugged in to power. one day it just stopped turning on.

If it is the cpu then I just buy one, but if it is the motherboard I guess I can sell the remaining parts :( I dont want to buy a cpu just to test the motherboard.

cpu is a celeron at ~1.8gzh
motherboard socket is MPGA478MT
512 RAM

Westinghouse laptop (yes you read right, westinghouse)

thanks a lot in advance guys.

In my experience, it's very hard to diagnose this sort of problem. With a desktop, it's not too hard to find another CPU or motherboard to swap out, but getting a replacement laptop motherboard is expensive.

However, also in my experience it is much more common for the motherboard to fail rather than the CPU. In this case, you might as well just part it out, because replacement motherboards tend to run at or even more than what the actual working laptop is worth.

thanks, I think you are right about the motherboards breaking more often.. and more expensive, I just had a little hope it was the CPU.

if someone has any idea though with the info I gave I would appreciate it.

It sounds more like the CPU is the trouble maker though.
There is really no reason to spend money on this if you don't really need it.
PohTayToez (love the name lol) is correct, the cpu and motherboard will be quite expensive to fix.

well actually I have found CPUs better that the current one I have that would work with the motherboard like core duos at ~$30 from ebay

If it is the CPU then I would just buy one.. actually I don't own a laptop so I could really use it.

what makes you think it's the CPU explain more please

Well, you said it would turn on then turn off if it was installed. Then when you took it out, it would stay on.
And my friend had this happen to him a while back. But, there is also a good chance that there is something wrong with the power...
