Friend Just Ordered a Radeon 9700 PRO

He has a Dell Dimension 8200. He has a 250 Watt Power supply. We just found out the card recommends 300 watt.

Is there a good chance it will still work?

If it doesnt, he is thinking about grabbing a new case and PSU. Will the dell board (P4 Board) work with the new case/PSU combo.

nope Dell boards don't like anything but Dell PSUs. The board will more than likely fit in any atx case but like I said, Dell does weird crap with their P1 connectors so you need to get a more powerful PSU from them

On some dell psus, you can chop out the ATX cables and just rearrange the sub-wires ... of course getting acces to the schematics for the wirings is a pain ... a multimetere can help though :) ... regardless, a 250W PSU is definitely not sufficient.

that is still a relatively new model, is he under warranty... in which case he may not want to mess around with anything

I just did exactly the same thing! I bought a new case for a dell dimension 8300. I ran into two problems though. The motherboard in the dell, was specifically made for the dell case, so I couldn't fit in the new case. Then because I got a new MOBO, the computer wasn't actually a "dell" anymore, almost none of the software I got with the computer worked. So I would wait, before Upgrading to a new case.

That'll be the case almost whenever you do any major change, not just with dell :)

well, of course, it was just an example. Also I meant the software cd's I got with the computer for the computer, since they were for dell, those cd's wouldn't work anymore.

Are they restor disc's or dell modified Windows?
If it's dell modified windows then it will install as a normal windows setup, but have the dell product support written into the windows package.
