Friend's Laptop isn't working...

My friend's laptop had been really slow, and was almost full on the HDD, so i told him to get an external HDD to put songs and stuff on. He got the HDD, it worked good for about a day then his computer basically gave up on him.
First he couldn't access anything on his desktop, then he tried restarting and now it will all load, except for explorer.exe
If you try to turn it on in the Task manager it'll flash on, then turn right back off. This will happen in safe mode as well.
Does anyone know how i could fix it?

BTW the system is an HP with an Athlon XP @ 2.2 ghz, 448 mb ram and about 60 gb of HDD. If you need to know anything else please tell me

What OS is he running ? I would just try doing a Disk cleanup and a defrag. Then see where that takes ya. If its still playing up i would do a hijack this and post the log here.
 
o yeah. He's running WIndows XP
and about Hijack this, he can't run anything, it doesn't let you get on explorer.exe, so he can't dl anything
 
Alright he got it fixed. Turns out he had a java environment running and didn't have all the files for it, and it was messing it up. He got rid of it and his computer and HDD is working perfectly
