Hi. Building for a friend with the specs listed below. Please review it and give your non-biased suggestion. My friend is using it for web applications, youtube video streaming, gaming but non extreme and likes to listen music in the background at all times as he has tonnes of album etc.

Here it....

1. intel cpu E6750 with 1333fsb, 4mb cache, 2.66ghz (I have no idea if it would be best to get a third party cooler of which I maybe ask him later)
2. ocz pc2 6400 system elite 1gb x 1
3. connect3d x1950 512mb with artic cooling
4. sata 2 seagate 320gb 16mb cache
5. gigabyte p35c ds3r atx motherboard
6. lg h55L 20x lightscribe dvd sata
7. sony fdd 1.44
8. razer krait gamer mouse
9. lg L1953trmonitor 19" 2ms
10. microsoft basic keyboard oem
11. cooler master rp550 extreme power.
12. coolermaster 340 case
13. win xp home sp2
14. Did I missed out anything else?

All these worked out to a total budget of US1250 and definately he is not spending anything more than that.
 
That computer is fairly decent, but for $1,250 I would expect overall a better computer. You could try to work in a Q6600 and a slightly better mobo.

Where are you buying these parts from?

edit: I'd also suggest an 8600GTS
 
With all of us suggesting to add this and that, I decided to make a list mostly of what u suggested and add a few changes.

Then, there is the video card missing, but that comes to 965.86, leaving u 285$ to reach your limit.

This gives u a good idea of what you could go for, of course the 8800GTS is great, but its up to u to see if it is not too much for him. But roughly, the X1950PRO is better than the 8600GTS, but it lacks DX10, which isn't very useful on XP :p
 
Thanks for all of the response and suggestions, especially Kilauea's effort to reorganise it making it easy for me. But I have a few questions.

1. Is the gigabyte ds3r P35C a better option or the asus P5K. My friend only needs a single gpu so is there a need to get the asus which has support for crossfire? And also the asus is more expensive.
2. I know the 8800gts is a good card but my friend told me he does not want to make the switch to win vista so isn't the connect 3d x1950 512mb (with artic cooling) perfect for xp since only vista requires dx10 card?

or the 7900gs?
Is the artic cooling a good feature for the connect3d card?
 
I would say the Asus and the Gigabyte's are quite similar, but I chose the Asus because it was cheaper on Newegg. As for the GPU, well I must admit that I have been wondering the same... If you won't use DX10, why not go for a cheaper card that will perform well in what you do. I still have a hard time making a clear answer for it. The answer that refers to the future is hard to beat, but I tell myself that in the future there will be better versions of DX10 cards coming out, but will u want to change your GPU for one of those, specially if u paid a premium for them. I, myself, would probably accept paying the price of a 7600GT if it was to serve for at least 12-18 months before changing GPU and that is because its a fairly good performer for its price.
