From XP to 7... poissible?

Okay so I currently have XP installed on my computer and recently added a new HD which still has nothing on it. I also have Windows 7 ready to be put on and my buddy told me it'd wipe my computer. I don't want to lose all my stuff but I don't have a portable hard drive... Only a 32GB USB stick. What I wanna know is if I'm able to load Windows 7 on the new hard drive, copy over my files from the old hard drive (what I want to keep) then wipe it after.

Process:

Unplug old HD
Boot from CD
Install Windows 7 on new HD
(this is where I get really lost)
Move music, some movies, some programs and other files to new HD
Wipe old HD of Windows files

Is this possible and if so, how?

music and pictures you could back up but don't know how many. could create a partition first then back up to the new partition. could back up to dvd and or dual layer if you have many. if you do install wipe it clean. i don't remember if the option was there for quick format. i say don't do it. full format and do it right one time.
 
well it's not imperative that i keep everything... more so that i don't have to go back to get all of it. I'll probably just keep music... not much else. could i load everything (few programs and music) onto my new HD, disconnect it and load windows 7 on the old one replacing windows xp??
 
Just unplug your old drive. Set the new drive up and install 7 on it. Plug your old one back up and set it as a secondary drive in the boot order. Boot up to 7, drag all the files you want off the old drive. Then format the old drive and use it as a storage drive.
 
No need. Switch the drives around so that the new drive is the master and the old is slave, boot from Windows 7 DVD and install on the new drive. Then, you can dual-boot both of them (Win7 and WinXP) so, if you have compatibility issues with 7, you can still run XP. Also, you can transfer your files and settings using Easy Transfer, which you can run on XP.

All that would be fine and dandy, if he was asking how to dual boot.

All he really wants is have his old stuff on his new harddrive having to hardrive with two different os systems will make this even harder. Just simply plug both but drag you stuff to the new one that than wipe the harddrive and keep both harddrive and use on for the os and the other for you personal stuff
 
He can dual-boot, copy his stuff over, and then modify the boot menu to remove XP, then format the old drive.

It'll make the file copying easier. Then in the end he just removes XP from the boot menu and wipes the drive.
