newbie here. not really clued up on these things. i got an old scaleo p with a d2190a motherboard, its got a pent 4 2.8ghz
my question is, is it compatible for a dual core?
cheers for any help

Well after doin some googlin I found my chipset only compat with pent 4 and celeron.
Question my p4 2.8ghz won't let me browse if I'm say burnin a disc or some other task, would gettin a better p4 let me do more or bite the bullet and get a better motherboard for a dual core?

For one, you shouldn't be doing any other task while.burning cd's or you will cause burning errors. But yes, you will have to end up getting a new system.

Cheers john.
Its my son keeps using my computer to convert and burn things which means I can't do anything till he`s finished. I'm a computer novice so to be able to get dual core etc can I just change the motherboard and cpu as funds are lacking due to underpaid job and 5 kids lol

Well, if you get a new motherboard, most likely you'll need new ram most likely ddr3. You'll need new CPU, motherboard, and ram. You can get 4gb of ram for around $35 or so.

Cheers john, thanks for the input

Hi mate, I did some research and there is a micro-code update and bios update that will accept the P6 architechture on your board. This essentially means that you should (may be) be able to install a dual core pentium processor after updating the BIOS and micro-code, however you would need to reinstall Windows. It may not work.

The best way to go is to look on ebay for a seller of a mobo, cpu, ram combo. Aim for something like a E8400 with a gigabyte motherboard and 4GB of DDR2 ram. Some of them will even come with an operating system.

Just as an example http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-Mot...37413501?pt=AU_Components&hash=item3a72fef07d

since posting been googling a bit about computers, and as funds are tight im looking at motherboards compatible with what i got at the moment but with better upgrade possibilaties as and when funds allow. so bit by bit i can upgrade my components without breaking the bank.

You are not going to get much. From what i see that board is DDR1 and that is far outdated. Look for one with DDR2 or DDR3 so you can have better upgradability.

I would suggest with some research you will be able to find a 775 socket board that supports Core 2 Duo and your current CPU. That way you can simply replace the mobo and go from there. Look into the 965 chipset on ebay.

Cheers Fella
Think I will do that, for my needs I don't need an amazing system just one that allows me to do more than one thing at a time.
Got my eye on a couple of things from your recommendation of the 965 set.
Cheers for the feedback guys, been a help in pointing me in the right places to look for info
