Gainward GTX 750Ti video card doesn't work in 1 of 3 PCs

Hi guys,

I have 3 virtually identical PC's and just bought 3 new Gainward GTX 750Ti video cards for them.

The problem is that the new card type doesn't work in one of the PC's and all I get is a black screen from start up.

The PC with the problem was running a Gigabyte M61pme-S2 video card before which still works fine in that PC and the onboard video also works fine so there's something about the new card and that machine that is a problem, even though that combination is fine in the other identical PC's.

Things I've tried so far:

-I've tried the same card in other PC's and it works fine.
-I've tried putting a higher voltage PSU in the machine with the problem.
-I've tried removing the BIOS battery for a minute to reset the BIOS and also selected default factory settings
-I've tried a new video cable and new monitor
-I've tried running through all cables out of the card ie. HDMI, standard etc

I'm not sure what else to try.

Can't be a driver problem because it doesn't get to that stage.

Can someone please offer some advice on what the problem is as I doubt I can get a refund on a card that will test as working.

Many thanks,

Ana

Most likely need a bios update on the one machine. Verify what version of bios is installed on all machines.

Thanks for the advice John. All 3 PC's will be on the same bios version though, so I doubt it would be that.

How do you do a bios update, anyway?

Thanks again

How do you know they are on the same bios version? Have you checked? You get the bios update either at the motherboard manufacturer website or pc manufacturers website depending on if custom built or store bought.

Does it still have onboard video enabled in BIOS? You could check by swapping the display to that output when it's in a 'black screen' state.
I've tried putting a higher voltage PSU in the machine with the problem.

I'll assume you mean wattage. PSUs operate in the same voltage range, you simply need additional amperage to up the amount of wattage.

I bought all 3 PC's at the same time from the same shop so they should be identical.

Which specific PCs? You really haven't given us much detail. I could pick up off-the-shelf motherboards of the same model and it's a gamble how long they've been on the shelf, which batches they were from, what BIOS versions they run or even a difference of subversion of the boards themselves.

Sorry for not giving the right info beers but not sure what info is relevant.

Exactly what info do you need, and I'll post it here.

Many thanks for your help.

My specs are:

AMD Phenom II motherboard (I think, can confirm later)
AMD Athlon II X4 640 Processor 3 GHz
1x 2GB Ram
1x 8GB Ram
Windows 8.1 Pro

I've tried all three cards in the PC and they all didn't
work, so I know it's not a dud card, and the fan spins which means
it's getting sufficient power.

In the PC that it doesn't work in I've tried two PSUs, one 700W and
one 600W, neither of which worked. I've changed BIOS settings a
bajillion times and even made them identical as one of the computers
that does work, and I've tried removing the CMOS battery. I've tried
with all different RAM configurations and I've unplugged and reseated
everything several times.

I've managed to boot up using onboard graphics and the video card
isn't in device manager, there's only one unknown device which could
be the card or it could be something else. The driver disc won't
install because it doesn't detect the card.

I've also tried with different monitors and cables (used both DVI and
VGA, neither work) and even the old batch of video cards I had (AMD
Radeons, can't remember which series though) but they work, so the
PCI-E slot appears to work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

AMD Phenom II motherboard

I'm sorry, but that just won't work. Thats not an actual name of a motherboard. The model of the motherboard will be stamped on it somewhere, usually between the pcie slots or near ram slots.
