Game Networking problem

Whenever I try to connect two computers via crossover or connect to another computer in the house via wireless router, my laptop goes incredibly slow. I have no problem accessing internet, or transfering files this way, but when I try to play a game between computers, the lag is enormous.

Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be? Help would be appreciated

perhaps your computer is too slow to run the games, more information would be helpful, what game, what kind of computer ect...
