Game on one monitor desktop on other

Im a complete noob when it comes to multiple monitors and im considering getting a second one, can you play a game on one screen and have the desktop to do this and that on the other?
I couldn't care less about dual monitors for gaming (the line between the monitors would drive me mad) I would just want it for multitasking.

To game on one and do other things on the second monitor, you'd need to run the game in windowed mode. But also the game may pause if you click outside of it.

You don't have to run it in windowed mode. You would have to alt tab out of the game to access the other programs. That's how I run my games. Almost all games will lock the mouse to the game. What programs are you looking to run while gaming?

True, thats still kind of annoying, and just browsing the web doing this and that really maybe i won't get another monitor then
