game server

would it be possible to set up a server and install games on it then just run the games from the shortcuts on multiple computers, say maybe about 10 computers running the same game off of the server? was thinking about doing this and was just wondering if it would be possible so that i could save disk space on the computers

In short, no you cannot do that. Plus you would need a hefty server and some server side services running to deploy applications over a network.

i have to disagree, i do it at a friends house, 1 sever and 4 computers running of it, BUT the networking and the way you install the games is complicated and you will need a server with raid, to speed it up.

Oh, well please enlighten me on your set up then?

Ok, but the attitude is not needed lol, am i not allowed to know how to do something you cant, i sure there are many things you know that i dont. I need to allow password file sharing and share the .exe file for the game and the most important thing you need to do i cant talk about because its against the rules and the moderators have a vendetta against me at the mo, so i cant risk tell u, sorry

No, I don't have any vendetta against anyone, I am just curious as to how you accomplish this for the sake of misinformation. Plus most games have some sort of license or DRM involved that will not allow for network deployed instances.

So basically you are saying you hack the games to make this possible, and even so if you get it to work it would not be that good of an experience. Try having one machine (the server) run multiple instances of COD MW2 or any other modern game. This means the server would have to uni-cast each instance to each client taking up tons and tons of CPU usage.

I think you are talking about sharing pirated games over a network, which sure, any simple peer to peer file sharing network can do this.

What the OP wants is for one server to host a game and have the clients connect to play off that one install and it doesn't work that way. That is why Microsoft invented SMS, to deploy applications (via an App server) to client machines since there is a lot to it, a lot more than just sharing the files.

Not to mention, Windows itself usually does not let you run the multiple instances of the same .exe. Ever try to launch any program after it is already running? Windows will say that ____.exe is already in use and not allow you to run another instance.

You may not but others do. Anyway, the game does not run on the server, it runs on the computer you are trying to play the game on, it just uses the files on the server. I was using an old P4 for a server and 4 other gaming PC's. Loading the game took twice as long at least, but once all the files were loaded in the memory it worked fine, no problems. Well any games that doesnt need installing (for whatever reason) and a lot that do (but not all) will work as long as they are cracked. Im telling the truth, i just dunno how to prove it to you + im at my house at the moment, not my friends house.

No, if you run a shortcut, which has a full file path to a server, it runs off the server since it is installed there. You are talking about self contained apps, and yes a self contained app can be run from anywhere but if you run it over a network it runs it on the machine it is locally hosted on.

Self contained apps don't need to be installed because they have all the resources they need with in the app itself.

So in short, like I said earlier, it is not really possible.

plz, it is possible, i wish you were here so i could show you. Maybe i could rig up something here at my house. If i sent you a video of two computers connected to 1 other and i showed you that only one of the computer has the games installed and i get both computers to run the game at the same time will u believe me?

Then just post your set up. If it worked like you said things like SMS, Zen, and other application servers wouldn't exist. That is all I am saying. Business networks would just simply share an application and be done with it, but it doesn't work that way.

look i was just experimenting with networking when i got it to work, i dont know why it works, all i know is that it does.

Post my setup. ok,

A computer much like my own in my sig.

A E3200, 2gb ram, asus mobo, with a 8800gt

E6600, 4gb ram, with a 9800gtx+ and asus mobo

Q9550, 8gb ram, 9800gtx+ and asus mobo

The server, P4 3.4ghz, gigabyte mobo, 2gb ram, onboard graphics.

Also a hub and leads to connect it all up with, but i understand how this is going to convice you that it can be done.

There is not enough data provided to say it works. You aren't listing any steps or how you accomplished it. I would have to know your set up to confirm it is working, and I think it would only work on self contained applications.

I am not saying it is impossible I am saying it isn't practical it hardly works like the OP wants it to.

Are you going to try and do it yourself? Just setup a file share network between 3 computers, so each computer can access files on both the other computers. Then on the server, share the whole game folder in program files and crack the game. Now try running the game on both computers.

Games i know work:

Rainbowsix Vegas 2
Far_Cry_2-
World In Conflict
Counter-Strike Source

Their are more but they are game that run without installation:

Left 4 dead
dawn of war
Doom 3

i think we did this accidentally once too.

my bro was trying to copy the old counter strike that i had on the pentium 3 to his laptop and another friends laptop to play a lan game.

well, instead of copying the installer exe, he clicked on the application exe and the game kicked in on both laptops and the P3. so the game was running three instances on the pentium 3 machine. it was slow as heck and the P3 was crawling through the floor in agony until i showed up and killed all the game instances and showed them how to install the game.
