games on external hard drive ...

ok so i recently got a new external harddrive (500gb, 7200rpm, USB 2.0) and although i realise i wont be able to install new games on it there should be some old ones that would run ok from it. however, the question is, what games? how old are we talking here?

2005: guild wars, world of warcraft?
2004: half-life 2, UT2k4, far cry?
2003: KotOR?
2001: black & white?
1999: rollercoaster tycoon, quake 3, UT?
1998: half-life?

so how old would the games have to be for me to be able to install and run them from my external harddrive?

I would think some of those games you mentioned would be fine, just be prepared some rough load times when switching levels or such. Just try it and see what happens. I know Half-Life will work because I actually ran that game off of a zip drive years ago with a friend.
 
ive installed a few and they do seem to run well. ive even tried team fortress 2 and that seems to run well without much longer load times.

i havent actually got a bad hard drive on my main computer (2 x 160gigs) but i dont like having to keep installing/uninstalling games so i thought id try em on my external HD aswell. fortunately they seem to run pretty well.
