Gaming and Processors

Im a newbie when it comes to the way computers work.
I have heard that the latest and the greatest processors are best for gaming, but my question is, how much does it really matter?

If you are running a setup with say... Intel's basic 1.8ghz dual core and a Nvidia 9800GTX vs. Intel's new i7 processor with the supposed 8 core (4 actual cores, multithreaded) and an almost stock Nvidia 7200GS.

I play World of Warcraft, and I am wondering what part a processor plays in these kind of games.
I know that you would be getting better FPS with the first setup, because of the graphics card alone. But what else is there besides FPS in a game like that? What part does the processor pay?

I am planning on building a computer and ordering all my parts for Newegg either today or tomorrow. Would it be wise to spend most money on the graphics card or even it out between the graphics and the processor?

I am wanting to spend about 200-350 on graphics and about 200 on the processor. But would spending more on the new intel i7 be worth my while for gaming?

So many questions... soo little time.

For world of warcraft, a basic dual-core like Athlon X2 5x00+ or 6x00+ or a Pentium Dual-Core 5x00 or Core2 7x00 will be more than enough, and those processors are rather cheap. Usually for gaming it would be wiser to shell out a little more for the graphics, WoW ain't very demanding but if you want to max it all out with good FPS get something good (NVIDIA 9600/8800/9800 series or ATi 3870/48x0 series for example). Apart from 4870 and possibly 4850 all of those cards are very reasonably priced and even though they may be a bit of an overkill performance-wise, they're only slightly more than $100 at max so they'll be easy on your wallet.

The best within your budget would be Core2 E8400 for a CPU and NVIDIA GTX260/ATi HD4870 for graphics. And generally, i7 setups ain't worth it ATM, especially if you're mainly intending to play WoW.

I am planning on getting the Nvidia 9800GTX or so.
But lets remove WoW from the picture now, what difference does a processor make in gaming? Does it affect the fps?
 
WOW isnt demanding
i was running it with a fps of 20 on my computer (shit) 32mb integrated graphics card, 512mb ram etc. Was unbearable in citys though lol.
 
contrary to what some people might say definitely get a quad core processor for gaming especially for windows 7
