Gaming Issues - Gateway DX4300-15e

So in 2009 and I bought this Gateway DX4300-15e. It came with an integrated graphics card. It was never top of the line or anything like that, but it got the job done. But with new games coming out requiring more, and more - I decided to go out and buy a new graphics card. This desktop has a low-wattage power supply, so I think I stayed within the realm of not pushing the power supply too much.

My Problem: Prior to buying the card, I noticed there were a few games I couldn't even run...the high-end games. Games like Just Cause 2, Far Cry 3, Dishonored, etc. There were games I COULD run, and run them decently... low-mid settings. Games like Spore, or Minecraft, or The Sims 3.

After purchasing the card, I noticed I can run the higher end games...but they all run the same way - choppy. It's a repetitive lag that just keeps on throughout my gameplay, and it will get a bit better at minimum settings, or low resolution, but it still stays. canirunit says I can play all of these games with the recommended settings, but I can't.

Why?

My specs

Gateway DX4300 - 15e
OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 810 Processor (4 CPUs) ~ 2.6GHz
Memory - 8192MB RAM
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GT620 (The previous integrated is a Radeon HD3200.)
Power Supply - 300 Watt
DirectX - 11

Are those enough specs to indicate a problem? Is my processor not fast enough to keep up? Am I running my computer too hard with the graphics card? Is my computer just not as good as I think to run these games? I played Spore after I put in the graphics card, and it feels like it runs about the same. I'm not noticing much of an improvement.

Thanks guys,
Chad

I bet if you change your power supply, you'll see you'll get better performance. Your OEM 300 watt power supply is more like a 180-200 watt unit if you are lucky. The gt620 requires a 350 watt psu at a minimum. Hopefully you haven't damage the video card underpowering it.

I just purchased the graphics card yesterday, and it hasn't had much use through any gaming or anything. Do you recommend I take it out, stick with the integrated until I get a new power supply? If so, any recommendation on a good power supply for under $90 that's compatible with my system?

Or is there another cause probably, or another direction I should go in.

I would definately take it out and just use onboard video for right now. If you plan on playing more high demanding games then you will need a better video card then the gt620. Either get the corsair cx500 or cx600, which are usually $60 and $70 respectively at newegg right now. Would recommend getting a gtx 650ti or 660.

What would be the best power supply I could get for under $50, and then along with that... a graphics card that would work with my specs and that power supply? Any suggestions? Sorry.. (I'm a noob.)

Thanks for your answers, and your patience John! Appreciate it. I ordered that power supply off of amazon and with some reward points, I grabbed it for $20! Should be here soon. I think I'll stick with the 620 for now until I grab some extra cash to go out and get another graphics card.

So you're thinking the GTX 750 would be a good card to grab with the new 500w power supply and my rig? I see that's around $120ish like you said.

Anything notably worth purchasing for mid-level gaming in the $80-100 range? With the 500w power supply?

All depends on how much you want to spend. If $120 is too much then look at the AMD R7 250 for about $100.
