gaming pc parts listing suggestions

Hi. My name is catherine lim and I resides in Singapore. I am new to computer forum and certainly hope to have a nice stay in this global discussion web server or whatever appropriate to call it.

I admit that I am neither a tech guru nor a geek at computers (which is basically the primary reason which led me to this forum after serveral hours of googling). Well, let me start off...
I have a younger brother who's birthday is drawing near in a month's time and he is insisting to have his first gaming desktop pcs for his birthday gift. I knew he meant diy desktop pcs and not a prebuilt pcs which is what setting me down for a moment (because I have never build an entire desktop pc before). But surprising I have straighten out my thoughts when I saw a local store selling pc parts with the option to assemble, test and set up for a premium fee of $20.

Well, now all I need is the parts list suggestions for the entire gaming build before I can submit the list to the local store. On the parts list, I need the following with a budget of not more than $1200(SGD) / $800(USD) with monitor and other accessories:

mainboard
cpu
videocard
ram
power
monitor
keyboard and mouse

Branding does not neccessarily matter. All I think my brother needs is a good running fast gaming pc with no chance to lag.
Okay I think thats all and I am awaiting all precious response to this post.

With around $800 budget. Allowing $180 for a 19" Widescreen
I think you could probably get:
CPU: E2180
MB: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L. If your local shop don't have this, I will suggest you go for any P35 chipset, with reliable brand. Gigabyte/ Asus/ DFI/ Intel.
GPU: Galaxy 8600GT 256MB DDR3/ Shapphire HD2600XT 256MB DDR3
RAM: DDR2 800 2 x 1GB. I knew KingMAX is cheap, but don't know if availiable in Singapore.
HDD: Seagate 250GB ST325062NS. If they don't have Seagate, West Digitial is OK. Make sure they are 16MB Cache.
DVD-burner: LG GSA-H62N
PSU: 450W - 500W PSU. I think AcBel is availiable in Singapore. They are not too expensive but solid. Don't go for those really cheap.

I would go look at your local parts store first, is there an 3C computer store near there? In Taiwan they have many parts, so I would look there first. Setting aside around $200 for your LCD (with integrated speakers), kybrd, and mouse, you could probably get an E4500, 650i, and 8600.

Okay. This is after the compilation of the closest matching parts on the list on top of those that daisymtc has suggested.

As my local store does not carries E2180 and cpu are sold in bundle with the motherboard, the following cpu and motherboard is what I have come out with:

E2140 + Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L = $304

My local also does not carries galaxy video card but do have asus, evga, leadtek, powercolor and sapphire. However only powercolor has a hd2600xt.

powercolor hd2600xt = $269

AS for the ram, kingmax is not available but kingston is avaliable and it is the cheapest among other for it being a value ram. It is available in ddr2 667 and ddr2 800

For this, I am wondering how many gig to get.

The seagate harddisk is available except I am not sure to get the ide one or the sata 2 one prices are

ide = $110
sata2 = $113

The LG dvd-burner is available at $59

AS for the power, there is no acbel brand but it does have antec, coolermaster, hec, icute and seventeam BKV. And also I am confused as to how to watts should be sufficient.

All the above should work out to less than $900 SGD for the cpu alone. As for the monitor, any budget 19monitor for $200 SGD?

Can you not order online? Those prices are just crazy... You can get TWICE the computer than that for the price. For ~$270 you can get a 8800GTS 320mb card. A 320gb SATA drive for $70, DS3L $100, E2140 $50. So that combo is overcharged by about $150. For $195 you can get this CPU, and come out cheaper. This is "top of the line" as that E2140 is about as cheap as a dual core gets :)

I just don't want you to get ripped off, i know you said at a local store... but its only 3day shipping :P

Sorry but I really don't get what you mean in the highlighted lines. Are you advising me to buy online or buy at the local store? The provided newegg link for the E6750 is in US currency right? I resides in Singapore and certainly what you have suggested has already overflow my total budget of about $1200SGD/$800USD. Although I am also quite thankful for your concern of the possible ripped off.

I think sapphire is a better brand... and also make sure if the graphic card is GDDR3. Although there may be GDDR4, the performance is not big different. GDDR3 is OK.
CPU: How about E2160? Did they get one? If you have little more money, you can consider E4400/ E4500...
RAM: Kingston RAM may be a little expensive. What other brand do you got? But anyway get any brand a pair of DDR2 800 1GB will be fine.
HDD: SATA one. make sure they are 16MB Cache
DVD burner: make sure they are SATA.
PSU: Antec, seventeam are good brand

Well I meant that you may want to go to your local store and calculate up how much of an good system you can get.. you post it up and we critique it...

I would also recommend Newegg. Since you live in Singapore you must have someone in the US to send it from the US to Singapore?

Not a good idea to ship from US to Singapore. she will lose the warranty and not cheap anyway.

hmmm... Singapore... lived there for 4 years, liked it very much :)

anyway, to the OP, you could try going to the guy and ask him to come up with a build for your budget and based on that you can go around to compare prices and maybe change a thing or two... you could even check back with us to see how well is the build.

also, where is this shop that you go to? Sim Lim?
you might wanna try looking around in Funan IT Mall or Challenger (not sure about the pricing though especially in Challenger)
