gaming

Besides the battery issue you are dealing with a portable not desktop system where everything is designed for temporay and limited use while a complete system can be custom built to "take on the world" as they would say in a variety of ways. You won't see the performance from graphics cards for the same reasons.

Some of the latest "tail kickers" only now offer 2gb of ram capacity in a portable unit. For a desktop that is an effective amount of memory for many of the newer games out.

you need to find a place where you can customize your own laptop. i found a good place in australia and customized my laptop and i have no trouble with all modern games at medium settings. it cost $2200AUS though

It will certainly do that. COST that is. When looking over a number of models to see what came with with what included I said what? A small 40gb hd with only 256mb ram and onboard sound for $1,000+? You may see 1gb at $1,500- with a 60gb or 80gb drive. Laptops primarily are not made as gaming machines while some newer ones have custom options available with a large price tag attached. I'm not surprised that spamdos has to run games at medium settings on a laptop. The video cards are not quite gaming cards.

I get what your saying pc eye

So even today if your looking for the best gaming experience go with a desktop right?

Does a laptop even come close to it?

Im kind of torn between the two as I can see myself using both machines for different reasons. I guess if there is a greater difference in how a game will look on desk vs laptop, I guess I would go with a desk.

Im looking for something with the Physx chip and was wondering if you think if I look up places online to buy directly from manufacturers (can you do this? like I thought you could do this with dell?) they can add it in there, whether it be a laptop or desk.

Also generally, could I choose what monitor I want if it like a bundled package I 'm going to purchase (like if it comes with printer, scanner etc.)

thanks

With a custom built desktop you can go much further then what you could pack into a portable unit just to start. Although the newer models offer an updated hardware packages they are still compact units. A large variety of crt and lcd monitors will work on a Dell, HP, and other prebuilt systems as well as a custom build.

The problem with rushing into PhysX is whether or not the big names like ATI and NVidia will go with it. If a manufacturer doesn't have an online store(rare) they generally will have a list of online vendors that carry their product line.

and the cost difference is huge, you could pay three times or at least double for a laptop to perform as well as a desktop. also if they have the same specs, then the desktop will always perform better because they are not packed into a small case where cooling can become an issue

You definitely will pay a much larger price when trying to boost the performance out of a portable unit. labtop-notebook Another item to consider when putting all of this together is just how far any desktop or laptop can be upgraded at a later time. Laptops are notorious for being limited in that due to having all hardwares packed into the small casing it comes with. The desktop on the other hand can easily see swapouts of all hardwares as the general rule. Only on prebuilt proprietary and certain custom made cases you would find some limitations there.

So PC Eye, what price range is pretty standard out there right now for a good gaming desktop?

What did you mean when you said this

"The problem with rushing into PhysX is whether or not the big names like ATI and NVidia will go with it."

it wasnt to clear to me.

Also could you tell me what good companies computers offer swapouts.

thanks for you and all for your help

The ATI and NVidia crouds both still haven't endorsed the latest PhysX put out by Creative. In other words they haven't jumped on the band wagon quite yet. As far as having a system where you can easily swap this or that out at any given time you would first stay away from any prebuilt package deals and learn the steps in custom building or have one custom built for you at usually just over the cost of a prebuilt depending on the hardwares selected plus labor.

Pirces on various hardwares will depend on how high ended you decide to go along with who supplies the hardwares. You can easily pay around $1,000- for an SLI or Crossfire setup just on cards alone. For 2gb of performance dimms spend from $110 - $195 depending on brand and vendor. To plan a system(custom) you first have to figure out what type of case you are going to build along with the budget you have for it. Then you do the price shopping routine to get the best deals even bundles at times.

I paid around $1,400 for the desktop in my sig. Well worth the money.

But! The one there is that you were the one that chose the hardwares. Nobody sold you some case already built with this or that as the only options available. You saw far more then 256mb or 512mb of ram especially on a dual channel capable board with a faster cpu then what is generally seen on a prebuild as well. Mainly you got what you paid for along what you paid for. :D

i would recommend alienware. I just bought an area-51 laptop from them and am very happy with it.
i spent $1400 ($1300 with a $100 instant rebate) and i can play half life 2 and lost coast with hardly any lag at all.
battery does die fast while playing a game but it doesnt effect me at all. I can still take it anywhere in my house and keep it plugged in and anywhere with an outlet. when not playing a game the battery life is around 2 hours.
all around good laptop.

stats on it:
nvidia geforce go 6600
80GB hard drive
intel pentium M processor (1.6ghz)
512mb ram

get a single core pentium M or turion processor. you'll need the extra battery power if you plan on getting a decent graphics card in it.
better that you get a celeron M or Sempron than a P4... battery life will be compromized and semprons/ celeron M's are better at gaming anyways.
netburst (P4) = lose when it comes to power usage

Ageia doesn't need ATI or NVidia to go into Physx with them. Physx isnt a graphics card... it just accelerates the physics of games. they do need manufacturers though, just as ATI and NVidia need manufacturers (like leadtek, sapphire, and ASUS)
of course ASUS and BFG tech are already manufacturing PhysX cards and newegg carries both... i believe the asus cards are out of stock though

i think cyber power pc builds some halfway decent lappys that'll play almost any games

So are leadtek, Asus, bfg tech, and sapphire computert companies like dell?

I wouldnt mind looking them up but I'm on dialup

I'm confused though, if Ageia makes the PhysX cards why does bfg, asus or other companies need to make it for them ( or am I just confused completely?)

You guys are telling me different things. Should I get a laptop or not if gaming quality is my highest concern?

Do you guys know any good companies out there that offer swapouts?

thanks

You are not going see the gaming machine come out of any laptop. Gaming like other large apps especially with demands placed video along with other system resources will take it's toll on a portable unit due to the limitations seen there. The best portable for gaming would have to be one where you can choose what is put into it from the start and not some prespecified package sold by the name brands. Some online vendors do offer notebook pcs where you can choose from a longer list of options. For Intel equipped models, http://www.mwave.com/mwave/deptNB-CUSTOM.hmx? For AMD custom options, http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1897&
While other vendors simply carry a larger list of prebuild models where you choose bewteen brand cpu as well as laptop manufacturer and model and order other items as addons. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&SubCategory=32&N=2000260032
