So if I put a new mother board in a Gateway current Vista instalation will not work, right? I should be able to use someone elses Vista disk and use the product key on the side of the Gateway though, correct?

I had XP on a Gateway machine. The motherboard (Foxconn) died. I replaced it with a Gigabite, but KEPT THE SAME CPU. Then, when I started the PC, I had to activate my Windows, so I called them and got the key.
I think that if you keep the same CPU, they shouldn't be any problems.
The cpu alone has nothing to do with it. If you change the motherboard it will definately ask to be reactivated. You would need to change the processor and video card for it to ask for reactivation.
