Back in Jan 09, I bought a Gateway MD 2601 notebook. Originally, the notebook came with a Vista Home Premium on a Hitachi 250gb 5,400 rpm HDD (HTS543325L9A300). About a week and a half after, I switched hard discs to a Seagate Momentus 320gb 7,200 rpm(no S/N ATM) and installed XP Pro. Like many, I am not a fan of Vista. Aside from a few hitches with the audio, XP went on smooth. All was good until about 2 months ago. I had noticed during this time, the CPU fan running more consistent and heavily. Then started having complete shutdowns. Started keeping up with the CPU temps using Everest, and found I was pushing 95C!!! So I cheated a bit, opened up the notebook, and checked the thermal tape, which seamed untouched (in the sense of pointless for being there) - so I added some Arctic Silver, and it cooled it down alot. Standard idle is now 75C-80C, and with a load, maybe with a youtube vid, I can get up a bit higher, maybe 90C. Still high right? I thought so too. So I have been on the phone with Gateway and of course, they want you to send this thing in yadda yadda. So before jumping to the post office to mail in my notebook, I thought I'd try the 250gb drive with Vista, which I had to have mailed to me. And too my surprise, Vista actually runs cooler O.O After putting the disc in, letting it do its thing, I started Everest up. 60C on idle, 70C max with a load. This can't be possible? Or can it? I have been through the services, msconfig & task manager taking all the crap out and slimming down unnecessary stuff, yet I am still running fairly hot. Even with things toned down, Vista is still running cooler with this beast. I check my email, read the news, watch some online vids, I play a few basic games, Spore being the most graphically demanding. I just can't understand what the issue is?? Something as a side note I found " funny ", while in the BIOS tonight, the cpu fan started running real hard and boom, shutdown. No hard disc installed when this happened. I went back to the BIOS and let it run for about 10 minutes in there, and nothing. I guess at this point, I am pretty confused on where to go with this unit.
**********************************************************
Vista runs about 20C cooler than XP on this notebook
Both HDD run at 35C
The fan is blown out every 2 weeks, and I don't live in a dusty environment
No other user plays with this but me
XP is suppose to use less resources right?
