I have an older gateway computer its an s 5200d it has a single core pentium 4 2.8 ghz cpu the motherboard is WMEOEMD945GPBG1 INTEL (PUTTON BAY) 945G with an lga 775 cpu socket. My question is can i use this processor with it http://www.allhdd.com/sla9u-intel-c...et-lga-775-processor-only-new-bulk-pack-.html or should i just go with the intel pentium d 840 processor. The differnce being the sla9u has a faster fsba nd 4mb cache though it lacking the .2 ghz per core. This is an 05 omputer with xp pro on it i use for my older games, currently i have a nvidia geforce 210 slient 1gb video card 4gb ram and an asus dvd burner. I looked up the specs on gateways site and they had a list of processors im guessing those were the available ones at the time. So just curious if another cpu with the same socket would work as well with this setup or not.

No, it won't work, you need at least a 965 chipset to run that new processor, you only have a 945 chipset.

Thank you very much i went ahead and ordered the 840 for 14.99 a lot cheaper anyway. The dual core will run laps around this single core i hope thanks or the help.

Another question then, if i have the 945 chipset does that mean i can run the pentium d 945 cpu?? its 3.4 ghz dual core with the 4mb l2 cache. Another question is my current cpu is 90nm and the 840 i have is 90 nm and the 945 is 65 nm i believe does that make a differnce even though the 945 is a lga 775?
