Topic kinda like this came up but i didnt find my answer.

wat is the difference between GDDR3 and normal ddr. preformance wise?
 
shouldnt this be in the ram section?
yes and no, its ram only found on video cards.

It is allot faster, but it only comes in video cards... DDR2 is faster for the ram slots on your computer, but GDDR3 is faster for video cards, ive seen it get as low as 2ns laterancy, or was it 3ns???

Not if they are clocked the same it isnt. The difference between DDR (implied GDDR), GDDR2 and GDDR3 is that the maximum speed is raised -- this is a theoretical value. Now if OEMs decide to clock GDDR3 at the same speed they clock GDDR then there's not difference. B

Perhaps in clock but the raw latencies damn near annihilate any performance benifit as compared to high performance DDR. GDDR2 has the flaw in that, as clocks begin to rise, the circuitry is more sentisitve to noise and cross interference ... a problem worked out with GDDR3; I dunno if this issue is present with DDR2 or not though (i would hope not)

Thats a big difference (it was 2ns btw ... and that's not latency .. latency is natively measured in cycles ... ns is for response time)

This is a semi-tricky question to answer as OEMs have gone out of there way to confuse things it seems. There are two considerations when deciding on a video card, the first being the core and the second being the memory platform. Now according to nVidia/ATI, certain cores and certain platforms are supposed to be associated with each other however OEMs are free to do whatever the hell they want and hence the confusion.

If you consider say the ASUS V9999GE (6800, 500MHz GDDR3) and the ASUS V9999GT (6800GT, 350MHZ DDR) then it becomes inheirently obvious of a dilema of choices. The former features superior memory (another advantage of GDDR3 is that it allows for significantly improved clockspeeds as ive mentioned ... and 500MHz isnt anywhere near the threshold). The latter features a superior core but at a cost of slower memory and half the quantity. The question is ... which card is the better? Hard to say but it seems that the advantage leans in favor of the V9999GE (and definitely so when you consider softmodding and such). Now for games that make extensive use of shaders the V9999GT (16x6) may be a better choice than the V9999GE (12x5) but it highly depends on the games involved.

So to answer your question, "GDDR3 is typically a superior platform however do not neglect to consider the core as well"
