Gearhead needs advice

I have discovered forums have a massive amount of collective knowledge on the subjects covered. I am just a gearhead looking to upgrade my computer to handle editing chores that I now have after the purchase of a GoPro camera for hot rod use. I'm checking out "gamer" PC's like iBuyPower and the such. Is a gamer type PC the hot ticket for video editing? I am open to all suggestions on what to get, thanks in advance.

Would you feel up to the task of piecing an entire PC together? Complete PC's you buy in the stores are crap, nothing beats the do it yourself custom built PC.

Whats your budget? Do you have keyboard/mouse/monitor etc that kind of stuff already?

Not interested in building one, just need a recommendation on what would do the job of HD video editing. Best bang for the buck. GoPro says for a minimum, 3.2GHz, 4GB RAM, VPU with dedicated 1 GB.

That's kind of a tight budget for a computer which you need video editing capability. Video editing can be pretty intensive on the hardware and lesser hardware just cant cut the mustard. And a $500 or $600 computer you might get from best buy wont be able to do it.

But there may be other options. For one many others here will have something to say to point you in the right direction. I for one would keep an eye out at the local computer repair centers, most get stuff in that people don't want. Then they fix 'em up and sell 'em cheaply.

But if you are only needing the computer for storing and uploading videos/photos then nearly any computer will work. However, if you plan to use video editing software, then not any old computer will work.

What exactly are you wanting to do with the videos/photos? Just store them and upload them to a site or sent them to others, or edit it all with a program for a certain look?

Also, which GoPro camera are you going to get? There are several different models.

Right now it takes 30 minutes of the CPU running at 100% to produce 1 minute of converted (mp4 to AVI), edited video

I wouldnt buy a gateway. I'm looking at some others in your price that will do what you need without breaking the bank.

I can't find anything GREAT but this is a Phenom II quad at 3.4ghz and a 5770 graphics card which is a really good card-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229206

And the power supply, although still semi-crap, is better than anything gateway uses.

Or this one if you fancy intel, the I5 is overall better than the Phenom II, but for what you want to do not that much really-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227321

The case is ugly IMO, but if you like it thats all that matters.

The Cyberpower (your 1st recommendation), is $120.00 cheaper than the Gateway and has a 250 watt stronger power supply. The Gateway has 1.5GB on the video card vs 1.0GB on the Cyberpower. Will that be noticeable for media editing? Also for the same purpose, how does the Gateway's i7 stack up against the AMD?

I have read the reviews of this Cyberpower, not too good.

Thanks again for all the help.

The I7 is stronger, no doubt, but video editing/creating is one of the Phenom II's strong areas so the difference in that area is negligible.

I've been thinking more, and Nvidia cards are the way to go for video editing so let me look more.

Edit- Found it man, this one is perfect for you-

That I5 is very powerful, stronger than a Phenom II even with the lower clockspeed (actually the turbo speed is 3.4ghz anyway on that CPU), and it has a gts450 video card which is a great card.

The 1gb VS 1.5gb of video card ram won't mean anything for you. The gts450 has more CUDA cores which is what matters.

And of course, check out the price!

PS not as strong as your 1st recommendation, but has USB3 which I don't think ANY computer in this price range has. Thanks alot, I'll be reading the reviews now, and if they are better than the other model, I will buy and keep you posted as to how I like it. I can tell you now I do like the price.

No one has even reviewed it yet.

That PC is definitely stronger than my 1st recommendation. The intel I5 2400 is a stronger CPU than the AMD Phenom II 965 by far.

That is an open box product, meaning in their words.....

Newegg only guarantees your receipt of the Open Box product with the purchase of this item. Any accessories MAY OR MAY NOT be included. Newegg will NOT send you any missing accessories, even if it is required to use all of the item's functions.

Back to me typing again, keyboards, mouse, power cord, no big deal other than the hassel of getting them living where do.

Maybe I should have mentioned, I am not a gamer and never will be. That 1st one had only 2 USB connections, completly useless to me, I'm always unplugging stuff now with 4. Multimedia editing is the only reason for a computer up grade, as my 1.6 GHz unit works fine except for that.

Some video editing software works better with CUDA cores, which only Nvidia has.....obviously the more CUDA cores the better the performance. The gt440 has 144, and the gts450 has 192.

Also, the CPU is a key factor as video editing utilizes the CPU quite a bit. The I5 is a stronger CPU overall than the Phenom II....not that the Phenom II is bad, just that the I5 is better and faster.

A small issue, these gamer type computers don't have the 15 in1 card readers. I use an old crappy USB card reader now and was hoping to have one built in to the new computer. Guess you can't have everything, I'll just buy a new card reader.
