GeForce 7600GS v. 7600GT

I'm looking to buy a NVidia GeForce 7600 series video card, and I had a few questions.

First, what are the benefits of buying a 7600GT over a 7600GS?

Second, I noticed that the 7600GT only has 256MB memory, whereas the 7600GS comes in a 512MB format. Does the 256MB 7600GT still outperform a 512MB 7600GS?

Third, I want to make sure that the video card will run on my computer. I have a Dell Precision 370, 3.4GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1024 MB RAM, PCIe, 350W PSU. My main concern has been the PSU--I've been told that since it is so low, that the GeForce 7600 series would be the most advanced card my computer could handle. Is this true, or could I buy a card in the 7900 series and still handle it?

I'm essentially trying to get my computer ready for gaming, preferably for games like Medieval Total War II and Oblivion.

The GT is faster

GS has clock speed of 400MHz and and memory speed of 800MHz

The GT version is 560MHz clock speed, and 1400MHz memory speed

Does the 256MB 7600GT still outperform a 512MB 7600GS?

Yes the 7600GT can outperform a 512MB 7600GS.

Also, the 7600GS is not strong enough to take the advantage of 512MB memory. So, you not see any big difference between 256MB and 512MB versions of 7600GS.

Oblivion needs a powerful GPU if you want to play it at high setting.

So, go with 7600GT, and if you can add 1GB ram

My thoughst on the matter at hand.

I would drop the cash on a bigger PSU and get a better card like the 7900GS or something along those lines for the games your wanting to play. I concur with adding 1gb of ram. Just a thought. You can get the 7900GS for $165 after MIR on www.newegg.com
:P :D

Psu

You need to consider that most Dell machines use proprietary PSUs.

Yes but most Dells can handle the 7900GS with the currently used PSU. When I looked into ordering a DELL (out of boredom at work) they told me the stock PSU would run thier 7900GS and only would be upgraded to run the 7900GTX. Which seems crazy but yes you may need a bigger PSU. Never can tell until it's all in and running. It may cause you some stability issues if it's not big enough. :D

I would rather go with this card myself. It outperforms the 7900gs in bechmarks.

Yes it does out perform it but it's also $35 more after the MIR and $15 more before. Guess it all depends on his budget. I do the suggestion of the 1950 Pro card BTW :D Have you seen the new X1950XT's on newegg.com? Tripped me out because I've seen no reviews of them yet.
