Both 256 MB...which is better, GeForce 8600GT or GeForce 7900GS? I'm looking at overall gaming and 3D.

Thanks!

The 8600GTS is better than either, if I was getting a 8600 I would spend the extra bucks for the GTS, alot better card

outdated....if he can get a DX10 card then i dont see the point in buying older technology.

yeah probably the 7900gs performs better but the 8600 will be better for when more games become DX10 where as the 7900 will be useless then as it wont be able to run games in DX10.

What about the ATI graphics options? Any cards comparable to the 7900gs or the 8600 GT or 8600 GTS?

I'm a noob with ATI cards...

The 7900GS is by far the better performer, take a look at some of the benchmarks:

Yes the 8600GT is DX10 compatible, which is the only pro for it. But in reality, once DX10 games start to appear more frequently, the 8600GT is not going to be able to run them very well. So the higher performing DX9 card would possible even improve the look of the graphics.

X1950Pro is a little better than 7900GS

ATI equivalent to 7900GS is X1950GT, but 7900GS is better for overclocking.

if were you id og with an ati 1950

Dont get an 8600 gt because of dx 10 - this is because custom pc magazine got a copy of a company of heros direct x 10 patch and even an 8800 GTS couldnt run it well - getting between 5 - 15 fps on high. So imagine what the 8600 gt could do
