General question about upgrading processors

When you upgrade a processor, do you just replace it with the old processor or is it more complicated?

Huh?

When you upgrade a processor it means you UP grade, get a better one with better performance.

It's not hard to change it if that's what you mean.

As hpi had said, when you upgrade your processor, you change your current processor with a better one. Though the process is rather simple, you have to make sure that your motherboard support the new processor first before doing any swapping.

You have to consider what is the socket type on the current motherboard and look for a processor that is better in performance while still under the same socket type.

Clarification on your question would be nice so that we can give you a better suggestion or answer to what you are asking.

Cheers. :)

It also depends on what type of computer you have. If you have a Dell or HP, you may need to get a new motherboard (to support the socket type like b3rt said). Sometimes you need to apply thermal paste, get a new heatsink fan, and other factors come into play. What are your current computer specifications and what are you looking into upgrading.
If you need help finding out what stuff you have, go to http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php and get PCWizard 2008. Give us your current CPU type and the socket.

Thanks for your replies. What I actually wanted to know is if after you installed a new processor, can you just turn on the computer and have everything working fine or will you have change some settings? I dont want to get a new processor right now (I have a laptop and im gonna build a new pc anyway) I just want to know incase I need to get a new processor in the future.
