Generic ink cartridges for Canon printers

Can you use generic ink cartridges with the newer Canon Printers? I read somewhere that they had a chip in them that prevented you from using generic. Is this true?

I recently bought a Canon Pixma MP 160 all in one Printer.Couldn't purchase the # 40 & 41 ink cartridges for same locally so had them refilled by Island Ink.
They work ok but the chip causes the printer status to report the cartridges as being empty. I am told there is a way to "recharge" the printer to enable accurate ink monitoring, but don't know how to do it.
Any suggestions?

Chipped cartridges can't be reset as far as I know. Many printers refuse to run at all with a cartridge that reads as being low. I got rid of a Canon iP1600 because of that and because eventually you need to have the Waste Ink Absorber replaced and firmware reset by a factory service center... unless you can find a software hack to reset it yourself. I couldn't, so I tossed it.
