Well, I'm going to stick with my 3870 for a while longer. should i get a 4850 this month for my birthday or wait until prices drop on the 5850's?
My board only has PCI-E X16 not 2.0 so would that make a difference?

I wouldn't expect the price to drop much at all.

It's already cheaper than nVidia's best card, and it performs just as well, so why would they lower the price?

You know they have a 5750 and 5770 now too. I would get a 5750 instead of a 4850 or a 5770 instead of a 4870.

How much are they going for?

Per Tech Report

So far, things seem to be quite different with AMD's new Radeon HD 5770 and 5750 graphics cards, which hit listings last night and are still widely available. Newegg currently carries HIS, Gigabyte, and Sapphire versions of the Radeon HD 5770, all for $159.99. Only one Radeon HD 5750, a Sapphire variant with 1GB of RAM, is listed for $129.99, but it's also in stock.

In AU the 5750 is going for around $230 AU and the 5770 is going for around $260 AU.

From some of the reviews I have been reading the 5770 isn't as good as a 4870 or a GTX 260 and the 5750 isn't as good as a 4850 or GTS 250. This is mostly do to the 5750 and 5770 only having a 128bit memory interface.

Me too

Perhaps we were expecting too much, but the Radeon HD 5770 was a little underwhelming in our books. Where performance is concerned, we expected it to be positioned in between the Radeon HD 4890 and HD 4870, but our tests have shown that it was mostly a smidge lower than the HD 4870 1GB editions; which puts it closer to the 512MB edition of the Radeon HD 4870. The Radeon HD 5770 was also no match for NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 275 and GTX 260+.

The results seem to indicate the shortcoming of the 128-bit memory bus that the 'mainstream' Radeon HD 5770 possesses. In fact, we were perplexed as to why the Radeon HD 5770 didn't receive a 256-bit wide memory bus like the Radeon HD 4870 did. Perhaps that's still the same silver lining that divides the mainstream from high-end graphics cards as has been the case for several years now. All things equal, we think that a memory bus upgrade would allow the Radeon HD 5770 to convincingly outperform the Radeon HD 4870.

However, while the Radeon HD 5770 might lack the firepower to take on the big boys, it does have a couple of other things going for it. For one, it runs relatively cool even on a stock cooler and it has by far the best power consumption figures, which makes it energy efficient - something which the environmentally conscious should take note of.

So think of the new Radeon HD 5770 somewhat as a revised HD 4870 card that is much more environmentally friendly. Not to forget that it fully supports DirectX 11, which should come in handy as more DirectX 11 games slowly creep in to the market next year. Furthermore, it also boasts ATI's EyeFinity technology, which makes a triple monitor setup a possibility.

Yup the 5 series wont be dropping anytime soon...why not pick up a 4870-4890?

wicked cards!

There is not alot of benchmarks out yet. But it looks like the 4850 and 5750 are a dead even match overall. The 4870 seems to be a hair faster then the 5770 overall.

I would say the 4770/4850 and 4870 will be pulled pretty fast. They cant be selling the 4850/5750 and 4870/5770 for the same price. I mean what are they going to do, have a price war with their self. Plus the 5000 series 40nm. GPUs are cheaper to make. I would say in time they will release something like a 5790 or 5830, thats really a 5770 with 256 bit memory that will take out the 4890 too.

I hope so,
I´ve resisted the temptation on the 4770´s, My 4670 is stretched. When I heard about the power consumption I was sold 18w idle. All th 58xx line is very sweet, but realistically I´ll only be able to pick up a 5770 . I can´t see any price drops this side of Christmas.

I'm not saying you shouldn't get a 5770 or 5750 but I've heard some really good things about the 4850. And if you're going to upgrade again after this purchase anyways, you might as well get the one with the most impressive performance reviews / best bang for the buck. No need to break the bank when you're only gonna do it again when you get the money for that 5850 or better yet, a 5870. bling bling bling!!! lol
