Get past admin password

So I have this latitude d60 dell laptop from a guy. He 'forgot' his password and can't get on the computer. I check it out, and he's right. You can't get past the logo screen. You have to enter a main bios password to get in setup, to run safe mode, to do anything. How would approach this problem? I googled it and the most help thing I've found is jumping the bios battery connector. Though, I'd like to try something a bit less drastic first.

if its the bios password then yes, the only thing is either to remember it, or type in the master password provided by the manufacturers, but you will have to pay for it, or you could try the presets. resetting the bios battery might do it, but when i had a similar problem (although mine was triggered by me taking my laptop apart and putting it back together, did involve taking out the bios battery) it triggered an administrator password and that is only known by the manufacturer.(or not) there is a way
ok try Dell as the backdoor password. if not try DellD60
if not you can search for a way which requires a bit of soldering onto the motherboard and a use of an old trick. (i.e. basically displays the password) i am trying to find the link right now.

Neither of those passwords worked. When you type it in, are you suppose to see anything to indicate that you are inputting anything? When I type nothing shows up. Did you find that link?

Try this

Some BIOS manufacturer put a backdoor password in BIOS which always works irrespective of what password you have set in BIOS. Its a master password which is used for testing and troubleshooting purposes.

or this

Almost all motherboards contain a jumper that can clear all CMOS settings along with the BIOS password. The location of this jumper varies depending upon the motherboard brand. You should read your motherboard manual to check its location. If you don't have the manual then look for the jumpers near the CMOS battery. Most of the manufacturer label the jumper as CLR, CLEAR, CLEAR CMOS, etc.

When you find the jumper, look carefully. There will be 3 pins and the jumper will be joining the center pin to either left or right pin. What you need to do, is remove the jumper and join the center pin to the opposite pin. e.g. if the jumper joins center pin to left pin, then remove it and join center pin to right pin. Now wait for a few seconds and then again remove the jumper and join the center pin to left pin.

Make sure to turn the PC off before opening the cabinet and resetting the jumper.

okay, so I realize, that I don't know what bios this thing has and google has failed me, so one of the backdoor passes might still help. How can I find the bios on this though?

If I just call dell support, you think they will hassle me? I honestly don't know the name of the person who 'owns' this laptop. I just know it belongs to the boyfriend of a co-workers daughter. I know if I call them though, more than likely I'll get some sort of charge. What do you think?

There are two options, call Dell and get charged 250 pounds or something ridicules, (by the way the backdoor password is probably very silly, like the one i had on my IBM R50, it was IBMR50, but i tried like R50, or thinkpad R50 and stuff like that, lol) or go to local computer shop and they would probably do it for like 70 - 100 pounds.

Why don't the people who own the laptop decide what to do, give them options.

Do you have to tell dell who owns the laptop??

Well I was reading up on it, and apparently you have to have the laptop registered in your name, or at least know the info of that person. The reason I'm doing it all in the first place is because they are paying me to do it. Haha. So, no fix, no pay. But, honestly, I don't know how much this laptop actually belongs to this person. How do you just forget your password in that fashion? Anyway, not my place to judge.

I didn't see anyone mention pw 'admin'. Ive had similar problems unless its something else i missed. take out the battery and the reinstall, the default was always pw was always 'admin'. worse case that won't work either.

You could ask the person you stole it from!

....I didn't very much steal it. Thank you for your input though.

and Tremmor. I did try admin. Before I came on here. It seems my only 2 options are call dell, or tear the thing apart. So I'm just gonna have to get permission to tear it apart and not be liable if i break it haah

that won't happen. Problem is your not or they don't know if your qualified. you will never get a permission from the manufacture. wish ya luck with that one. A dell rep could.

I'd gladly do it. I'm confident in my ability to disassemble and re-assemble computer and laptops. But there is always that small chance. There is no way I could afford to reimburse the thing if something went wrong. I'm just in a loop I suppose. Unless it wasn't stolen.

DDD, why don;t you just take to a place which does it, as i said in there they would probably not ask questions + actually get you the password....
its not that hard, my friend who had no experience at all did it for me and it worked out good. i personally without any knowledge of know how, disassembled and reassembled a laptop (it was out of warranty anyway so did not matter much) i believe you could do it!!
just make sure that you are not responsible for anything that could go wrong, D
