Getting a New PC... Need Advice!!!

Hey, I am a music producer about to get a new PC. I will be running a lot of heavy memory using production software, and will also probably have to connect a lot of peripherals via USB, FireWire etc...

I know I need a fast processor and at least 1K of RAM.

I have no idea which processor is the best choice right now though.

Should I go with a "Dual-Core Intel Xeon"? A "Intel Core 2 Duo"?

What speed should I get? probably something above 3Ghz, but how much do I need and how much will be wasted?

I am lost and confused... please help!!!

whats your budget?
you should get Intel Core 2 Duo over a Xeon, If u have running a lot of heavy memory production software i would recomend at least 2GB of ram...

and how many GHz really doesn't matter... there are processors that are 1.8GHz that are faster then processors that are 3.6GHz

Hey, thx a bunch for your reply...

I am trying to spend probably around 2k...

So I need 2GB Ram, huh? What is better SD or RD, or do i have a choice really...

How come a Intel Core 2 Duo is better than a Xeon? I noticed the Xeon seems to be more xpsensive

Also, what speed do you think I should get then. What is the upside of getting a faster processor speed than?

1K of RAM? Hehe, hell I'll sell you a computer that has 16K of ram ;)

Anyway, you want DDR-RAM. Plain SD-RAM and RD-RAM are both older standards and aren't suppored by much of anything anymore. 1G of RAM is normally plenty. 2G is great if you want a bit extra performace as you shouldn't need a swap file(portion of your harddrive working as RAM)

For you, probably an intel processor would be best. They usally work better in such applications than AMD(which is more for gamming) I think a Pentium would do fine. Xeon is just overkill. Core 2 Duo would be great for you, or you could stick with the older Core Duo(I would as I don't like getting the newest stuff)

The faster speeds will result in faster rendering and what not, but also more heat and more need for cooling. I hear lots of problems with 3.8G intel's overheating all the time...
